With over 20 years’ experience in the construction and technology industries, Trent is a thought leader in the development of innovative software solutions that enable interoperability, visualization, and change management. Prior to Assemble Systems, Trent oversaw the development of server performance monitoring solutions at a leading provider of systems and application management software. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Mississippi State University.

Nancy Brown | Assemble Systems

Prior to assuming her position at Assemble Systems, Nancy Brown was a Senior Manager at Autodesk and was involved in transforming how building information modeling authoring and analysis tools were used in education. A former tenured associate professor at Washington State University, she earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. She is a licensed architect in Washington and a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Using an Integrated Virtual Construction Workflow for Cost and Schedule Optimization

Marcel Broekmaat | Trimble Buildings

Marcel Broekmaat is the Market Manager for Project Controls at Trimble Buildings (formerly Vico Software), where he collaborates with innovative construction firms throughout the U.S. and Europe on the management of the entire 2D-3D-4D-5D workflow. Prior to joining Vico in 2005, he worked with the Dutch construction company HBG (now Royal BAM Group), where he introduced and implemented model-based estimating and scheduling techniques. He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands concentrating on structural engineering and construction management. Marcel has become an industry spokesperson for the Model Progression Specification (also known as the AIA E202) and pens the popular blog The Flying Dutchman.

Stacy Scopano is the Senior Industry Strategy Manager for Building Construction at Autodesk, Inc, where he is responsible for collaborating with the global construction community to identify, develop, and deliver innovative digital workflows. Over the past 10 years, Stacy has focused on developing the role of BIM throughout the project lifecycle. He has held many roles in the industry, from design engineer and project manager to preconstruction estimator and business development. He supports a variety of education and research initiatives, and is active in industry associations focused on the advancement of BIM, including BIMForum. He studied civil engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of South Florida.

Building Movements and their Effect in High-Rise Structures

Bruce S. Kaskel | Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates

Since joining WJE in 1985, Bruce Kaskel has investigated and designed repairs for distress conditions in existing buildings. His expertise lies in exterior wall systems related to glass, glazing, water infiltration, corrosion, structural adequacy, energy performance, anchorage devices, and durability. His projects include aluminum and glass curtain walls, masonry, exterior windows and doors, precast concrete and stone panels. Likewise, he has provided exterior wall consulting services during design and construction of new buildings, including serving as the building envelope commissioning agent (BECx). Bruce has authored papers and presented on exterior facade materials, glass and facade testing, the history of glazing systems, and the structural failures of walls. He has also guest lectured at Purdue University and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Mr. Pinto has been the lead structural engineer on many national and international projects for the past 33 years and is a registered Professional Engineer in the Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Our international clients are in the United States of America and in the United Arab Emirates. In the past years, Malcolm has consulted on multi-million square feet of concrete flat slab construction, bridges, steel buildings, power plant support structures associated hot air duct designs for SCR units (Texas, Missouri, North Carolina), UNESCO heritage restorations (St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg), tilt-up buildings, etc. He has been active in the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and as a board director for the Consulting Engineers of Nova Scotia, The Design & Construction Institute and the advisory board for the curriculum Nova Scotia Community College.

GSA BIM Strategy for Building Operation and Life Cycle Management

Richard Gee | General Services Administration

Richard Gee is a BIM Strategist and Architect with GSA’s Region 5 (Chicago). He studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and BIM at Stanford University. During his tenure with the GSA he has served on many national BIM committees and contributed expertise to GSA policies, standards, and publications, including the BIM Series, Laser Scanning Guidelines, and BIM Guide for Facility Management. He received an AIA BIM Award for the GSA R5 BIM Standards that he developed with Ghafari Associates, which have received wide recognition both in the U.S. and abroad.

Stephen DeVito | Procon Consulting, LLC

Stephen DeVito is a Project Technology Specialist with Procon Consulting, LLC, where he focuses on applying information technology to building portfolios to make them more efficient in their design, construction, operations, maintenance and decommissioning life-cycle phases. He has been a consultant to the GSA Region 3 (Philadelphia) for the last six years, and has guided the Mid-Atlantic Region in its development and implementation of its BIM program, which included a pilot project utilizing BIM for building energy management and operations and maintenance. He holds a bachelor’s degree in information science and technology from Drexel University.

Progressive Collapse on Buildings

David Vaughan | Weidlinger Associates

David Vaughan is Principal and Director of Applied Science and Investigations at Weidlinger Associates. He leads efforts to improve the modeling of the progressive collapse behavior of buildings combined with centrifuge testing of subscale multistory building models for validating simulation models. David is also the primary architect and developer of Weidlinger’s FLEX family of simulation programs, which focus on blast, impact, ultrasonics, and electromagnetics. NLFlex was used to perform Weidlinger’s award-winning analysis of the World Trade Center collapses, and it currently supports programs of national priority for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. Prior to joining Weidlinger in 1976, David worked at Rockwell International for three years on the analysis of the space shuttle Orbiter during its design phase. He holds bachelor and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University.

John Jurewicz has 30 years of experience in digital modeling and information integration for the AEC industry. Notable achievements include leading the first team to design and build a long-range radar station for the FAA; replacing an air traffic control tower at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport using a Sikorski helicopter; managing the technology division for McLier; implementing companywide technology at AECOM; and obtaining a patent for his mobile office invention, The CADMobile. John has personally modeled over $2 billion in construction work over the past five years, including the Langham Hotel Renovation at 330 Wabash and 455 North Park Drive. He currently leads a team of model integration experts at Walbridge.


Kevin Baker | Gurtz Electric

With 11 years field experience coordinating rough in on major projects for Gurtz electric, Kevin is well versed with utilizing parametric modeling programs such as Autodesk Revit, Autocad MEP, and fabrication. He is often placed in the role of figuring out how to reroute systems in an effort to save the owners money to co form to tight budgets and was in this role for this case study.

Simulation-based Design and Discovery of Materials: Building from the Bottom Up

Sinan Keten | Northwestern University

Professor Keten is an Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. His research focuses on computational materials science and mechanics with an emphasis on biological and bioinspired systems. He has made original contributions to elucidating structure-property relationships in such biological materials as spider’s silk, which is one of the toughest materials known, and nanocellulose, nature’s most abundant structural building block. His most notable contributions involved theoretical calculations and multi-scale simulations that have explained how biological nanostructured materials achieve strength and toughness through important molecular level size and geometric effects. These main findings have shed light on the biological recipe for creating strong and tough materials out of weak molecular interactions. His work is currently funded by industrial partnerships as well as federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and Army Research Office. He has given numerous invited lectures and keynotes around the globe and has received awards from the Materials Research Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also actively involved in creating web-based educational tools for global training of next generation of engineers in modeling and simulation of engineering systems. Sinan joined Northwestern University in 2010 from MIT, where he obtained his PhD in civil and environmental engineering.

How do we teach our machines to design and build?

Jordan Brandt | Autodesk

Jordan Brandt is a technology futurist at Autodesk, with an educational and professional background spanning the architecture, aerospace, cloud computing, and composites manufacturing industries. Jordan came to Autodesk through the acquisition of Horizontal Systems, where he was co-founder and CEO and oversaw the creation of Glue (now BIM 360 Glue), a 3D cloud-collaboration platform. Jordan received dual degrees in architecture and Italian from the University of Kansas. His doctoral dissertation at Harvard University developed the concept of distributed manufacturing systems (mobile factories) for composite façade systems. He has consulted extensively for the Air Force Research Laboratory and Office of Naval Research to develop next-generation additive manufacturing technologies and materials, as well as for the GSA on their laser-scanning program.

Integrating BIM into CTA Design Environment

Jim Harper | Chicago Transit Authority

Chief Engineer responsible for managing staff of approximately 50 engineers and professionals. Department is responsible for maintaining infrastructure design and construction standards, performing in-house design, coordination of outside design consultants, design support during construction, oversight of system commissioning, participation in asset management development and implementation, and support of ongoing maintenance.

Mr. Harper has a BSME from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Urban Systems and Policy Planning from Northwestern University. He began his career working as a Systems Engineer on a people mover project at O'Hare Airport. He later worked on a variety of projects, alternately working for both transit agencies and consultants in a variety of roles, including a design/build light rail project in Minneapolis. Since 2005 Mr. Harper has worked for the CTA in a variety of engineering and maintenance roles, primarily associated with train control. As Chief Engineer, Mr. Harper is associated with a wide range of design, construction, maintenance, regulatory and community issues. Current programs currently underway at the CTA include major rehabs/replacements/expansions of traction power substations, signal systems, rail stations, rail shops, bus garages, track systems. CTA is also embarking on a $4 billion Core Capacity program to completely rebuild and expand a portion of a 100 year old rail line.

Matthew Gibbs | Chicago Transit Authority

Civil engineer responsible for various facilities and trackwork design projects.  Also co-manager for CTA Engineering's CAD and IT resources.  Civil engineering representative on CTA Engineering's CAD standards committee.

Mr. Gibbs has a BS Civil Engineering and BS Architectural Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.  He began his career designing and testing building automation and control systems.  Since 2008, Mr. Gibbs has worked for the CTA Engineering in a variety of roles including engineering, surveying, track inspection, quality control, and CAD and document management.  Projects include Kimball Interlocking track renewal, Dan Ryan track renewal, Englewood track renewal, and Ravenswood track renewal.

Ryan Reese works for Lend Lease as an MEPF Project Manager. His experience includes site development, residential high-rise construction, and large-scale single-family home developments. Prior to joining Lend Lease in 2007, he worked as an assistant superintendent with Ryland Homes. He holds a degree from Utah Valley University in technology management with an emphasis in construction management.

What is COBie?

Bill East | Prairie Sky Consulting

As Founder of Prairie Sky Consulting, Bill East focuses on the adoption of the of the Construction-Operations Building information exchange (COBie) and other United States National BIM Standards. He was formerly Research Civil Engineer at the Engineer Research and Development Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Champaign, Illinois. He authored the Standard Data Exchange Format for project scheduling, which is the foundation for the Corps' Resident Management System. Tools resulting from his project collaboration research, such as the Design Review and Checking System (DrChecks), support over 90,000 project teams worldwide at the federal, state, and local levels. Bill led the development of virtually all building information exchange standards being balloted under the US National BIM standard. The first of these standards, the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) is included in over 20 commercial software products. Additional standards include HVAC, water, and electrical system information. International adoption of COBie began with the 2012 mandate for COBie use on all UK government projects. The Corps will mandate COBie on contracts starting in October 2014. Bill is an internationally recognized building informatics researcher with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering degrees from Virginia Tech and a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also in civil engineering. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Step by Step: Defining and Implementing IFC and COBie Requirements for a Public Owner

Kristine K. Fallon, FAIA, founded Kristine Fallon Associates in 1993 to provide information technology consulting and services to the capital facilities industry. Over the course of her career, Kristine has pioneered the introduction of computer-aided design, electronic data management, online collaboration and project management, and building information modeling technologies. She currently serves on the Board of Direction of the buildingSMART alliance and is a contributing author to the National BIM Standard – United States, as well as to The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice (13th and 14th editions). Client publications in 2013 include: Assessment of Life Cycle Information Exchanges (LCie): Understanding the Value-Added Benefit of a COBie Process and State of Tennessee Office of the State Architect (TN OSA): Building Information Modeling (BIM) Requirements Version 1.0. She also developed and teaches Computer-Integrated Project Delivery in Northwestern University’s Project Management Program.

Deke Smith | National Institute of Building Sciences

Deke Smith, FAIA is the Executive Director for the buildingSMART alliance at the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). Deke was instrumental in the beginnings of the NIBS Construction Criteria Base, now the Whole Building Design Guide. He initiated both the National CAD Standard and the National BIM Standard. He retired in 2006 after 30 years as a designer and director with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, deputy CIO at the Army Research Laboratory, and chief architect for the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Installations and Environment, which supported 540,000 DoD facilities. After 22 years as a volunteer with NIBS, he joined the staff as an employee in 2007. He has been recognized with the 1996 Federal 100 award; 1997 NIBS Member Award; 2006 CAD Society Leadership award; and in 2010 he was selected as one of the InfoComm 100. Deke is a 1973 graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture and has completed post-graduate work at the National Defense University. He is co-author of Building Information Modeling: A Strategic Implementation Guide published in 2009 by Wiley.
